The American Chestnut (scientific name Castanea Dentata) accounted for approximately 25% of mature trees in the Appalachia woodlands. Its nuts were a significant food source, not only for wildlife, but also for the Appalachian people. Its lunmber also was a valuable resource for building Appalachian communities.

In the early 1900's, a fungal pathogen was introduced that causes the chestnet blight disease. Unfortunately, about 99% of the mature chestnut trees were decimated. The chestnut lumber throughout our beer hall was reclaimed from coal camp houses in the Beckley area and a church in Doddridge County.
